Turkey: Urgent call from workers in film, TV, and advertising sector for suspending filming

Turkish film, television, and advertising trade unions, associations, professional organizations, and platforms called upon government institutions and ministries to suspend filming for at least two weeks due to the risk involved in the sector in the face of coronavirus pandemic

Turkish film, television, and advertising trade unions, associations, professional organizations, and platforms called upon government institutions and ministries, primarily the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Services in a joint statement to suspend filming for at least two weeks due to the risk involved in the sector in the face of coronavirus.

The full text of the statement is below:

“We would like to make an important announcement to our members and the public at large the resolutions we made following discussions with many of the representatives of the film, television, and advertising sectors on 15 March 2020.

Our line of business is particularly at risk due to the intense circulation of people and equipment. In the face of the working conditions at TV series, film, and TV commercial sets, certain difficulties in meeting basic needs, the increasing difficulty in ensuring healthy and hygienic work environments, and the possibility of any staff member carrying the virus, we are of the opinion that all filming must be postponed for at least two weeks.

In line with the measures taken and warnings made against the coronavirus by the World Health Organization and the public authorities in our country; as people working in high-risk conditions, we expect, primarily, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Services and other relevant ministries and government institutions to suspend all filming for at least two weeks until a healthy working environment is restored to protect our own health as well as to prevent contributing to faster transmission of the virus.

We, representing our respective sectors, therefore, call upon all the relevant authorities to take the necessary measures so as not to regret any inaction later on.”
