Posters with the term “LGBTIQA+” banned on campus

The private Security Unit of Marmara University attacked the stand of the Women’s Rights Club due to posters containing the term “LGBTIQA+.” Department of Health, Culture, and Sports threatened to shut down the club if the posters deemed as “obscene and not suitable for the family structure” are not removed

Marmara University’s Private Security Unit (ÖGB) intervened in the stand of the Women’s Rights Club on the campus as the posters contained the term LGBTIQA+. The students reported the issue to the Department of Health, Culture, and Sports (SKS). However, SKS said the posters were “obscene” and “not suitable for the family structure” and threatened to shut down the club if the posters were not removed within 10 minutes.

Marmara University’s News Portal, Özgür Marmara (Free Marmara shared the incident on 26 November on their social media accounts and said “As Free Marmara, we are here to expose trustee management of Marmara University, SKS, and ÖGB! We stand against all hatred, pressure, and censorship policies against LGBTIQA+s. We will not give up on defending our campuses, in which we are trying to build safe spaces, against LGBTIQA+ phobia. We stand by the Women’s Rights Club!”
