Mubi Fest Istanbul 2024, which was scheduled to begin today (November 7), has been canceled by Mubi Turkey due to the last-minute ban on the screening of the opening film “QUEER.” This decision came just hours before the festival was set to start.
Mubi Turkey announced the censorship on its social media accounts, explaining that the Kadıköy District Governorate prohibited the film because it “contains provocative content that could threaten public peace.” In their statement regarding the festival’s cancellation, Mubi Turkey expressed, “Festivals are spaces where art and cultural diversity are celebrated and where people come together. This ban undermines the meaning and purpose of the entire festival, not just one film.”
