The investigation against journalist Can Ataklı of Korkusuz, also the host of a TV programme on TELE 1, for ‘insulting the President’ due to his statements on earthquake taxes has been completed. The prosecutor’s office filed a lawsuit against Ataklı, demanding imprisonment from 1 year 2 months to 4 years 8 months.
The indictment, prepared by the Press Office of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, stated that an investigation was launched against Mustafa Can Ataklı for the statements he made on 26 February 2020 during Gün Başlıyor, the TV programme he hosts.
The indictment also included Can Ataklı’s defence. In his defence, Ataklı did not accept the accusation, stating that he had expressed criticism about where the earthquake taxes were spent, that he did not mention the name or the office of the president in his speech, and that he did not make any insinuations.
As part of the investigation, it was demanded that Can Ataklı be sentenced to imprisonment from 1 year 2 months to 4 years 8 months for insulting the president. The case will be heard at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance in the coming days.
