Poet and writer Sezai Sarıoğlu appeared before a judge again in a case in which he was acquitted four years ago. At today’s hearing at the 35th Heavy Penal Court of Çağlayan Courthouse, Sarıoğlu was sentenced to one year and six months in prison.
According to a report by Ferhat Yaşar from GazeteDuvar, the case against Sarıoğlu was initially opened four years ago on charges of “making propaganda for a terrorist organization” after his social media posts were reported to CİMER. The case was dismissed four years ago, but the plaintiff appealed, and the Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Sarıoğlu. However, the Second Chamber of the Supreme Court overturned the decision. As a result, Sarıoğlu was retried at the Istanbul 35th Heavy Penal Court. At the second hearing of the trial held today, the court sentenced Sarıoğlu to one year and six months in prison. The panel decided to postpone the announcement of the verdict, citing the absence of a prior criminal record as grounds. According to the decision, Sarıoğlu will not be sent to prison.
