Instagram was blocked by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) on August 2, 2024. According to a statement from the BTK, the social media platform was restricted due to its failure to comply with “catalog crimes.” These catalog crimes include offenses such as child sexual abuse, incitement to suicide, and insulting Atatürk. However, it is also suggested that the blocking of Instagram may be linked to the removal of messages regarding the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. On July 31, Presidential Communications Director Fahrettin Altun stated that Instagram had blocked messages of condolence for Haniyeh and condemned the platform for its actions.
As of now, there has been no announcement regarding when the block will be lifted or if further sanctions will be imposed.
