RTÜK fines TV channels over “İmamoğlu” broadcasts

Four TV channels were fined over broadcasts about İstanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu

The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) fined some television channels over broadcasts about İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.

According to the information shared by RTÜK member İlhan Taşcı, NOW TV, Tele 1, Halk TV and Sözcü TV (SZC) were given various fines over their broadcasts on İmamoğlu’s detention decision. All of the channels were given 3 percent administrative fines. Sözcü and Halk TV were also given three program suspensions.

RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin had warned the media to “act with restraint, to include official information and statements from the authorities, not biased and unrealistic news, and to broadcast in accordance with the law” regarding the investigations carried out by the İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, and said that the institution could take actions up to license revocation.

İlhan Taşcı said in his post that RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin distributed the reports to be included in the agenda only 20 minutes before the meeting, instead of sending them to the board members 24 hours in advance, as stipulated by law.
