Nuriye Gülmen and Rıdvan Akbaş detained

Taken into custody during the police raid at the İdil Cultural Centre, Nuriye Gülmen and Rıdvan Akbaş were arrested


Among the five taken into custody during the police raid on the İdil Cultural Centre in İstanbul where Grup Yorum make their rehearsals, on 5 August, Nuriye Gülmen and Rıdvan Akbaş were detained.

According to the statement by the People’s Law Office (Halkın Hukuk Bürosu), Gülmen and Akbaş, brought before the criminal court of peace, were detailed while Fırat Kaya, Ezgi Kul, and Yasemin Karadağ were released under judicial control.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

The Istanbul Governorate had announced that it would not permit the concert that would be dedicated to the memory of Helin Bölek and İbrahim Gökçek who had died on hunger strike against the crackdown on Grup Yorum and for a fair trial.

The Grup Yorum concert, scheduled for 15.00 in İstanbul Yenikapı and not authorized by the governorate, was prevented by the police and 29 people were taken into custody during the police crackdown.

ALL THOSE UNDER CUSTODY RELEASED

12 people taken into custody during the police assault before the band’s planned 9th Independent Turkey Concert were released. The other 13 were released, by the criminal court of peace to which they were referred with a request for arrest, on a foreign travel ban and under judicial control with the condition that they go into the police station to put their signature one day a week.

4 of those under custody was released upon being taken to the police station.

THE POLICE DELETED IMAGES CAPTURED BY REPORTERS

Preventing the journalists capturing on film what transpired during the assault, the police confiscated the reporters’ cameras and deleted the images.
