Kathy Acker’s book “Blood and Guts in High School” was censored after its publishing 11 years ago

Board for the Protection of Minors from Obscene Publications of the Ministry of Family and Social Services in its most recent decision on November 13 published in the Official Gazette, decided that Kathy Acker’s “Blood and Guts in High School”, translated to Turkish by Süha Sertabiboğlu and published in 2012, “harmful to minors” and obscene.

The Board stated the following in its decision:

“As a result of the ex officio examination by our Board within the scope of the Law No. 1117 on the Protection of Minors from Harmful Publications; certain expressions, visuals and descriptions in the book would have a harmful effect on the spirituality and development of those under the age of 18, and the book is of a harmful and obscene nature; as such, it has been unanimously decided that the book in question will be subject to the limitations in Article 4 of Law No. 1117, as amended by Law No. 3266.”
