At the 16th Çukurova Book Fair, there were claims that the poster of the book “Coup on National Education” by Mahiye Morgül, published by Nergiz Publishing, was removed at the instruction of the Governor of Adana, who was offended by the book. However, both the Adana Governorate and Tüyap Coordinatorship, which organized the event, denied these allegations.
According to Çağdaş Bayraktar from Cumhuriyet newspaper, the book’s poster hanging on the stand was removed by the authorities after the governor was disturbed by the book. Ahmet Acar, the owner of the publishing house, stated that their author Mahiye Morgül’s book “Coup on National Education” met with readers for the first time at the Çukurova Book Fair, which is why the book’s poster was hung on the stand, and explained the censorship in the following words:
“After the opening of the fair, the Governor of Adana visited the fairgrounds yesterday and saw the poster on our stand and gave instructions to his deputy. The deputy governor, whose name we do not know, came and bought the book like a customer. Then he suggested to TÜYAP officials to remove the book. When he received the answer that this could not happen because the book was legal, he said that at least the poster should be removed, otherwise he would not allow students to be directed to the fair. The authorities came to talk to us and explained the situation. The economic situation is obvious. So we allowed the banner to be removed.”
