The Speak Up Platform organized an event<\/a> about poet \u0130lhan Sami \u00c7omak who has been in prison for 27 years, within the scope of the online K\u0131raathane Book Fair.<\/p>\n

International Pen Executive Board Member author Burhan S\u00f6nmez and \u00c7omak\u2019s legal volunteer academic \u0130pek \u00d6zel spoke about the poet \u0130lhan Sami \u00c7omak in the second event of the Speak Up Platform in the festival program. Speak Up Platform Coordinator Ay\u015fen G\u00fcven served as moderator during the event which also included the screening of the film titled Performance No. 19, Anatomy of Freedom: \u0130lhan Sami \u00c7omak <\/em>produced by Erkut Tokman and Erkan Karakiraz from the Open Poetry Movement about \u0130lhan Sami \u00c7omak which had been hosted in the Fragmented Identities <\/em>section of the\u00a0 Borders Art Festival in Venice.<\/p>\n

S\u00f6nmez shared notes on the campaigns conducted overseas on behalf of the unjustly jailed poet, the outlook of literary circles on \u0130lhan \u00c7omak\u2019s poetry, and the poet\u2019s autobiography to be published by \u0130leti\u015fim Publishing. Asking \u201cIf there is a struggle for \u0130lhan, I joined in late. I have been involved only in recent years. It is of course \u0130lhan himself who started the struggle. Well, what can we do to get him out? What can we do to make sure his voice is heard and he gets out?\u201d S\u00f6nmez also shared information on international solidarity campaigns.<\/p>\n

\u0130pek \u00d6zel spoke about \u00c7omak\u2019s life in prison, the injustices he faces, how he writes his poetry, his hope, his ability to perceive life on the outside, and his lasting expectation of justice. Stating that visitation was not allowed for months and that finally two visits per month were allowed due to the pandemic, \u00d6zel also added that prison conditions were very difficult and that there was a mix of emotions because of health measures. Speaking in detail about \u00c7omak\u2019s writing process in prison conditions, \u00d6zel further stated that they had to work for years to be able to \u00c7omak a desk.<\/p>\n

Stating that Europe embraced \u00c7omak as one of their own poets, \u00d6zel also added that European poets find \u00c7omak\u2019s poetry to be hopeful. \u00d6zel also emphasized the necessity of increasing ways of dialogue to explain \u00c7omak more in Turkey.<\/p>\n
