Grup Yorum announced their upcoming concert on Twitter with the following title: \u201cWe are coming and breaking chains along the way\u2019\u2019. The Office of the Governor of \u0130stanbul issued a statement explaining that they did not grant permission to the event which would be held at 3 pm on 9 August at Yenikap\u0131 Arena.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018Lifting bans on concerts\u2019\u2019 was among the requests made by Grup Yorum members Helin B\u00f6lek and \u0130brahim G\u00f6k\u00e7ek who lost their lives following a \u2018\u2018death fast\u2019\u2019. A statement had been made shortly before \u0130brahim G\u00f6k\u00e7ek\u2019s passing that discussions with the authorities regarding the request had gone well. Following that development, G\u00f6k\u00e7ek ended his death fast and accepted medical treatment.<\/p>\n
STATEMENT BY THE GOVERNORATE: PERMISSION WAS NOT GRANTED<\/p>\n
The statement issued by the Governorate read: \u201cThe claims made on certain social media accounts and news outlets that the Governorate granted permission to an application for a concert to be held on Sunday 9 August 2020 at Yenikap\u0131 Arena do not reflect the truth. The Governorate did not grant such grant permission.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
7 Grup Yorum members were first detained then arrested on charges of \u2018\u2018resisting the police, insult and being members of a terrorist organisation\u2019\u2019 during a police operation conducted in \u0130stanbul\u2019s \u0130dil Cultural Center in November 2016.<\/p>\n
Helin B\u00f6lek, Bahar Kurt, Bar\u0131\u015f Y\u00fcksel, \u0130brahim G\u00f6k\u00e7ek and Ali Arac\u0131, who were among the musicians that were arrested, announced that they would go on a hunger strike on 17 May 2019.
